In medieval Spain, when the country was still under the influence of Islamic civilization, the cross-stitch design was made popular and many women wove the familiar ‘X’ stitch all over their household items such as curtains, rugs, pillow cases, etc. It became more of a sensation all over Europe when Catherine of Aragon, the princess of Spain, who later went on to become the Queen of England through marriage with King Henry VIII, brought the cross-stitch design over to England.
